
New NFLPA Executive Director DeMaurice Smith certainly has his hands full. With the CBA negotiations in full throttle and an office full of old guard still trying to pull strings, he’s starting to get a small idea of the kind of organization that his predecessor Gene Upshaw left behind. (And he came home from a trip to the West Coast to find a fire in his office!)

The news has been incredibly blunt in these hard times: Medicare and Social Security could be hitting the wall in 8 years. It’s going to hit everyone hard, especially the baby boomers and those who can ill afford to lose it. For many, what little assistance they might get from Medicare and SSI is all they have to fall back on. And many of us have friends and family who have already been totally wiped out financially by a medical catastrophe.

I have some more questions about the narrowing slate of NFLPA Executive Director candidates: What law school or business school did any of the 3 or 4 former NFLPA presidents graduate from? What do they know about disability Law? What union management experience do they have?
