Although the NFLPA decertified as a Union this past Friday, March 11, 2011, they were still required to file their LM-2 Financial Disclosures with the Dept. of Labor. This year, two LM-2′s were filed; one was for the fiscal year from March 1, 2010 – Feb. 28, 2011 and the second was filed as a final Terminal Report for the period from March 1 – March 11, 2011 prior to decertification.
.
We’ll start with a copy of the shorter final LM-2 which is 50 pages long. We broke the 476-page 2010 LM-2 into 6 parts so it’s easier to navigate and view (and also to hopefully keep it from crashing anyone’s system as we encountered when downloading the original file from the DOL website!). Here’s a breakdown of the 6 sections:
.
Part 1 contains Sections 1 – 17:
- Accounts Receivable Aging Schedule
- Loans Receivable
- Sale of Investments & Fiscal Assets
- Purchase of Investments & Fiscal Assets
- Investments
- Fixed Assets
- Other Assets
- Accounts Payable Aging
- Loans Payable
- Other Liabilities
- All Officers & Disbursements to Officers
- Disbursements to Employees
- Membership Status
- Other Receipts
- Representational Activities
- Political Activities & Lobbying
- Contributions, Gifts and Grants

A few months ago, we were contacted by Dr. Xinning Li and his team from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. This school has produced several studies in the past that have led to the development of more successful techniques in treating orthopedic injuries. They’ve had their studies published in such respected publications as the American Journal of Sports Medicine. Over the past few months, Dr. Li and his team have been developing another study that focuses on the incidence of injury and disability in players retiring from the NFL. For some strange reason, there don’t seem to be many studies available on post-career football injuries.

We’ll start this post off with an inquiry that just came in today:
.
I am sending this email in regards to the class action lawsuit. My name was on the list which was posted: Leroy Jones – I played with the Chargers from 1976 – 1984. I never received any information concerning the distribution of the funds as to when and how it will occur.

Dr. Daniel Amen
Dr. Daniel Amen introduces and summarizes his recent breakthrough study of nearly 100 retired NFL football players’ brains using SPECT scans at his Amen Clinics. This summary chronicles some of the time line and history of how the study came about and the subsequent negative reaction from the NFL. Scientific evidence continues to mount for the case linking brain concussions to long-term brain damage and we can only hope that brain health finally gains a prominent place in all professional sports.
.
The good news? Dr. Amen and his Director of Research, Dr. Kristen Willeumier, have also been working proactively to develop a tailored regimen of supplements and healthier choices to improve brain function for each of their study participants. And results so far have been very positive.
.
We’ve loaded this summary up on Scribd for easier access and viewing. (Click on the FULL SCREEN button to enlarge it for easier navigation – hit the ESC key to close. You can also click the DOWNLOAD button to save a PDF copy for printing and reading.)

After what seems like an eternity, Manett Phelps & Phillips and McKool Smith filed Motions in the Parrish, Adderley, Roberts vs. the NFLPA/Players Inc. class action lawsuit late last week for final review and court approval on August 20, 2009 by Judge Alsup. The documents just became available online so we’ve loaded them up on DocStoc once again for easier viewing and searching. The main part of the Motion outlines the basics of the case and subsequent settlement. The Exhibits outline the payment plan and schedules with the first payment scheduled for July 13, 2009 (they’ll miss that one!) and the second set for June 5, 2010.
It’s always interesting digging into the details: Turns out the settlement will be managed and distributed by Garden City Group which just happens to be right here in Seattle. Half of the funds (around $13 million) were placed into escrow on July 13th, the day this Motion was apparently filed. And then barring no problems, the balance will be placed into escrow on June 5, 2010 for distribution shortly after that. Another interesting detail from Page 7 of Exhibit 1: Players who elected to Opt-Out John Baker, Richard Yelvington, Lynn Chandnois, John Demarie, Dan Goich, Daniel Direnzo, James “Scottie” Graham, Deacon Jones, Steve Largent, Brig Owens, Ben Pucci, Donald Testerman and Andre Collins were all excluded from suit.
