Last Saturday, Hall of Famer Joe DeLamielleure left East Lansing, Michigan with a couple of his old college buddies to do an Easy Rider run all the way down to Mexico. They’re making this run to help raise money for the Shinsky Orphanage in Mexico and that’s their final destination: Matamoros, Mexico, where the new orphanage building and complex will be constructed. They’re still accepting donations on per-mile or one-time contributions. (Click HERE to read about the Shinsky Orphanage and their noble work and to donate.) It’s all tax-deductible and be sure to check out some of the cool enticements for donors.
You can follow Joe & Co.’s real-time progress online by going HERE (or click on the map to get an update). continue reading »

Over the past 25+ years, Dave and his fellow retired players have consistently emphasized the fiduciary responsibilities of their Union, the NFLPA, and its management to those retired members who have contributed to make the game what it is today. So it was a great leap forward from the Gene “I don’t work for them” Upshaw era just to hear new Executive Director DeMaurice Smith quoted yesterday at a press conference in New York from his first players’ meetings. It looks like the NFLPA is realizing that more retired players may end up going to the First Annual Independent Retired Football Players Summit (to be held in Las Vegas) than they’re expecting at the annual Retired Players Convention (to be held in Palm Springs) this year at the end of May this year again. So to make up for the fact that there’s no fee to attend The Summit, the NFLPA is now generously offering to waive your registration fee giving you savings of up to $300 a couple! They’ll even pay your next year’s dues to save you another $100!
But it’s not the cost of registration that’s prohibitive. Read our earlier post about the cost of attending one of their meetings in Palm Springs (click HERE). continue reading »

It seems that the most common comment from the young players today who read our last post from Sam Huff has been, “Who’s Sam Huff and Why’s He Mad as Hell“? (Read that earlier post HERE.) Like a lot of us, History wasn’t their strong suit on a college football scholarship…

Frank Deford continues to point out the long-running imbalance between current and retired disabled players’ benefits (or lack thereof) in the NFL. Deford discussed the intricacies of the NFLPA/Players Inc. trial on HBO’s Real Sports in January (click HERE read about that show).
In his latest piece, There’s No Love in the NFL, Deford discusses the callous indifference of the NFL and most of its current players to its old warriors.
