GLA Checks Latest Update for July
On Thursday, July 29th, the Circuit Court in San Francisco under Judge Alsup issued a decision on how to distribute the remaining funds that are still owed to the 2,062 retired players who were part of the Players Inc. GLA lawsuit. The first checks had gone out earlier this year and the second checks were scheduled to be sent out by the end of July but it was pointed out that there were still around 200 players who have not been located from the original list. The earlier plan was to pro-rate the remaining funds and simply add the money to the second checks. However, an extension was added in February to give some of the missing players more time to get their names and contact information in to the people administering the fund. 25 – 30 more players did manage to sign up to receive their first checks and there were still 200+ players who still haven’t signed in at this time.
.
Here’s the recent submission as officially filed with Judge Alsup by Plaintiff’s co-counsel, Manatt Phelps & Phillips. A date of August 12th is proposed as the cut-off date for finding the missing 200 players. Hopefully, checks should be going out some time soon after that. From what I understand, the Aug. 12 date is just a cut-off date to locate addresses; after that, they must send forms out and wait 30, 60, or 90 days for them to respond. After that, I’m sure they’ll find another way to delay the settlement the Judge approved over a year ago even further.

Who represents retired NFL players and their families?
NOBODY REPRESENTS US!
Where is our union, the NFLPA? Why aren’t they searching for the retired players they swindled? Out of their mouths, they claim we are one team and the rift is over. However, by their actions (or lack of), they won’t even lift one small finger.
I’m planning on using my portion of the second payment from the Players Inc. swindle to pay some of my out-of-pocket medical expenses for my upcoming total right hip replacement later this year. I’m still in the process of paying off my out-of-pocket for my last two surgeries (total left hip replacement & a hydrosele) because the two checks that barely covered “two seat cushions and a $5 co-pay” I received from Goodell’s “Player Care” Foundation was just not quite enough.
I’ve never heard of a medical benefit where the patient pays all the bills and then has to get on his hands and knees to beg for reimbursement.
This is an outrage but certainly seems to fit the standard protocol in the NFL.

I don’t see why they couldn’t just send the second checks out while they search for the other players. Then if they can’t find the players within the required time period, divide the remainder up and mail out a 3rd check to the players they have on record. Why not that?

This is really becoming a problem. Especially when you promise certain collection agencies that you will pay a certain bill for medical expenses in July or real estate taxes in July from the settlement check and you don’t receive the check. There are those that now need to hire a lawyer so they won’t lose their house and have their health insurance canceled. I have medical bills that needed to be paid and they agreed to wait ’til July now I am headed to court. Thanks a lot, NFLPA! This is really getting to be too much to handle for many retired player who were depending on this money and made commitments to people on this money. It’s just another way to punish us for making them do the right thing.
This is really a sad case that I even have to write this letter. All the while, the people at the NFLPA sit up there in their offices and collect their paychecks. They are worse than Congress!

What a sad and senseless situation! The NFLPA Leadership continues to allow this “GREED” problem that is destroying the retired players and their families.
Active players will soon be retired players and YOU too will receive this same treatment from your union.
And to all you active players: This is NOT advice from De Smith but from the retired players: Please save every penny that you can during your football career because once it’s over, you instantly become their enemy and will be treated with this same contempt!

Is there an available hotlink to the 202 missing players to view? Let’s track down some missing players.

Dick and all the other guys who may still be wondering if you’re on that list -
Go back to this earlier post and scroll down the list to see if you were part of the suit.
Click HERE to look at that list.
Around 200 of the players who were listed in the original class now can’t be located and we’ll need everyone’s help to see if we can find them. Wish I had someone looking for me to give me a check!
All the best!

Dave-
I remember signing up for this in the late ’90s. I played for the Steelers and the Eagles from ’64 to ’68. I’m hurting and could really use some help.
If you can help me, I would really appreciate your effort.
Thanks

No, seriously – I mean Garden City Group is the one with the Return-to-Sender list right? We shouldn’t need to comb through this list. Don’t they have a master list of the 202 floating around or a highlighted list of individuals who have been RTS?

We have to be the only class in American legal history that has to be responsible for tracking down the remaining unresponsive 10% IN ORDER TO GET OUR MONEY!

Unfortunately I think the idea is to buy time. This isn’t a legal standard that we’re dealing with, the idea of the class members having to track down members of the class action after a ruling and sign up deadline is ridiculous by any standard. I reiterate my point that the economy is in full blown collapse and I would refer to a story I watched on the news this morning about MET Life not paying the Life insurance claims to the families of our fallen soldiers. Instead, they’re sending them check books to NON-FDIC insured accounts! If these people can get away with this, then you can bet they’ll do anything to not release cash at all costs. This is a sizable chunk of money and again in light volume trading, it has to come from somewhere and when it does it will send tremors through the market. This is the treatment and we’re getting it. I wouldn’t waste one minute jumping through the hoops for this – it’s like dealing with the mob. If you want a real taste of what they’re doing, just watch the movie Catch-22.
Best of luck to all of you. I know how desperate some of our situations are. I encourage all of you to think outside of the box and not accept lies and half-truths from any of these people any longer. Trust me. I have lost everything but found what really matters and it’s not your revolving account, your house payment or car payment; it’s the people around you, a few good people. It will be okay. The more they distort, the clearer the reality becomes. The retired players won, the Union will pay and their problem will get much greater as the a result of the actions of the Union and the League. They have created a group dynamic in retired players now with a common experience. They are turning points and turning points usually make history.
My prayers are with all of you.

$12 million wouldn’t even show up as a blip on the world markets today and the money was actually transferred 2 months ago into the Administrator’s escrow account to disburse. It appears that the judge is the one who is holding the decision on those final payments.

This lawsuit has brought us the retired players together here, where we are seeing and hearing about each other’s problems in dealing with life after the NFL. It hurts me to see so many players that I grew up watching, my teammates and opponents all dealing with serious real-life situations. I pray that these second checks go out before the end of the month, and I hope that we support each other in the future battles against the NFL, the NFLPA and anybody else who has screwed – or will attempt to screw – us the retired players.

In response to Dennis Smith: Your thinking is sane with great common sense. But I’m afraid it’s too much like right.
It always happens when too many Lawyers get in one room. They do stupid things trying to show each other how smart they are. Indeed if Burt Grossman is correct on Aug. 12 being a cutoff date, then an additional 30 to 90 days before payout is probably closer to reality!
Should we enjoy all the interest accrued and should it reflect in our 2nd check …say dating back to when those in charge of the payouts said distinctly that the second check will be sent out on or about the end of July. Perhaps we should look into this considering the delayed monies in an account just sitting there is a hefty amount.
As far as “TRYING” to help matters along in helping find the missing 201 players that can’t be found or don’t want to be found, I have asked the Secretary of the Arizona Former Players Chapter to send out an email blast to all the members in our State. We also meet every 2nd Tuesday of each month. At our next meeting this topic will be on the agenda.
With that said: For all who read this and are Chapter members in their own State please do the same. Maybe – just maybe – we can find some more of these men.
