A Letter Back from Akin Gump

A couple of months after sending a letter with questions to Mary-Ann Fleming (Director of Disability Benefits for the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle NFL Players Retirement Plan) and Larry Lamade (of Akin Gump), I finally received this response from Larry Lamade earlier in the week. You can read my original questions on that earlier post by clicking HERE.

Here’s the letter (just click on each thumbnail to enlarge for easier reading) and check out the CC: list on Page 2:

Larry – could you please ask Mary-Ann Fleming to take time out of her busy schedule to answer the original questions I had sent to her? Thanks!

Dave,
I have a great deal of respect for the work you are doing, I know it is tough road. I thought it was funny that the guy I had filed and won a grievance against was still allowed to sit on my disability review board later.
Just remember their Philosophy: It is easy to win when you also control the opposition. I got a taste when I had been voted in as Player rep. Much time was spent by Upshaw to bring me back on the reservation after I had been severely critical of the Union which is why I had been voted in by my teammates. I had this crazy Idea that a union should not be able to dissolve, reform and vote itself back into positions of authority. I also didn’t think that Upshaw’s attorney should have been allowed to sit in the same room with 6 other football players to negotiate his guaranteed contract. That was a losing proposition every time.
The thing that struck me most was the realization that the NFL serves a national interest which brings in a whole new set of players to the Drama.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for your words of encouragement!
Upshaw was even dirtier than we ever could have imagined. But why did the NFLPA Leadership give his estate $16,000,000, name the NFLPA headquarters “UPSHAW PLACE” and then have the audacity to rename the dire need fund, “THE GENE UPSHAW DIRE NEED FUND”?
It seems in this case there was some honor among thieves?
Sincerely,
