Dr. Amen’s Interview on the NFL Dementia Debate

Dec 3, 2009

Dr. Daniel Amen has just allowed us to post a great interview in which he discusses his interest in studying the current debate and issues, how his clinic is studying the problem, as well as some of the new findings that have started to come out of these ongoing studies. (The entire interview is only 13:00 minutes long and covers a lot of topics so please take a few minutes to watch this for yourself and your loved ones.)

We encourage all retired players to take advantage of Dr. Amen’s offer to join their study and to help you find out more about what’s going on in your brain. The scan and followup are free – all you have to do is get yourself down to Newport Beach CA. Call Dr. Kristen Willeumier (949) 266-3703 to set an appointment or visit their website for more information (click HERE).

I recently returned from a 3day evaluation at Dr. Amen’s clinic in New Port Beach after several months of battling with The Travelers, the 49′ers Workers Comp carrier, to not only get approval for myself, but for my wife to attend. I’ve endured 9 VP Shunt brain surgeries and numerous grand mal seizures from injuries I sustained during the ’81 season with the SF 49′ers. Dr. Amen’s SPECT scans, MicroCog and EEG tests showed many areas of damage to my brain, but the good news is he sends you out the door with a tremendous game plan to take control of your life again.

Using a combination of diet change. I’m now on Dr. Barry Sears Zone Diet, which focuses on using Omega 3′s from fish oil to repair damaged neurotransmitters, while lowering cholesterol and reducing weight, working on my sleep habits and stress management, I have dropped nearly twenty pounds since mid October. I wasn’t grossly overweight to begin with at 6′-5″ and 240, but the best benefit is I’m beginning to be able to recall events from the prior days or week, which I haven’t been able to do in decades!

All of you warriors out there, do yourself and your family a favor and go see Dr. Amen. At this time, he is conducting FREE evaluations for any current or ex-NFL players who can get to his clinic and it could be a life-changing evaluation for you.

I would like to personally thank Dr. Amen and Dr. Sears again for helping me get my life back on track; although I know I still have a ways to go, I can see some progress being made already.
