Have You Participated in the NFL’s Retired Players Brain Study?

As many of you know, the N.F.L. is currently conducting a study in which 120 former N.F.L. players are undergoing thorough examinations outside New York City to assess their current neurological function. This is not the Michigan phone survey that was recently revealed — this is an in-person, full-day evaluation conducted by Dr. Ira Casson and other physicians.

I think everyone involved in football should see and listen to the C-Span broadcast available on the web. I have been listening to and watching all of the different resources brought forward. It is impressive to see. I hope those who will ultimately be brought to make decisions and differences in the lives of retirees take time to recognize that most of us didn’t have the medical resources that are now available. We were encouraged to return to the game without medical advice. We were encouraged to get back in the game because if you didn’t, your replacement would ultimately be given an opportunity to replace you. We had a memory test that was a joke (literally). If you could remember the punch line to the joke, you could get back in. 15 concussions that I tallied over time. I have no idea the effect. Who do I go to ? I don’t know. I’m educated, somewhat informed, but the dilemma remains, I must try to keep my current job so that my family can live their lives.

I developed hydrocephalus (water on the brain), during my second season with the 49′ers in ’81, and underwent emergency brain surgery during the ’81 Super Bowl season. I have since undergone 9 emergency VP Shunt brain surgeries and several grand mal seizures, and have been on anti-seizure medications for decades, and was forced to sue the 49′ers for WORKERS COMP!
After a 3-’month battle with their work comp carrier, The Travelers, I was just approved for a 3 day evaluation at Dr. Amen’s clinic in New Port Beach, CA, and literally just returned a few days ago. I know Dave Pear attended just before I did. I would strongly recommend seeing Dr. Amen and his team. They not only do a full blown evaluation with SPECT scans and other testing, they sit down with you and go over your results, and you leave with a playbook on how to get your life back in order. His first line of defense is a holistic approach, using vitamins to restore neurotransmitters to improve brain function. I’m already seeing improvement after literally living out of notebooks daily for the last 28 years.
I fought tooth-and-nail with the 49′ers Work Comp to be approved, even after my primary care physician referred me to the Clinic. When I finished with Work Comp, they not only approved me, but paid for my wife to attend, as I can’t remember what I did this morning, much less 14 years ago when we got married.
Right now, Dr. Amen offers a FREE one-day evaluation for any and all ex-NFL players who can get to his clinic. To all the other brothers who may be reading this, please get down there and get yourselves evaluated. I’m doing it to try to salvage my life and my relationships with my wife and my children.
