Frank Deford

Frank Deford continues to point out the long-running imbalance between current and retired disabled players’ benefits (or lack thereof) in the NFL. Deford discussed the intricacies of the NFLPA/Players Inc. trial on HBO’s Real Sports in January (click HERE read about that show).

In his latest piece, There’s No Love in the NFL, Deford discusses the callous indifference of the NFL and most of its current players to its old warriors.

“It’s not enough to just keep reciting that, well, football’s a rough, tough game and we must accept carnage as the price of amusement.”

Thanks, Frank!

Our union the NFLPA lacks integrity when the leadership continues to hire lawyers with our own pension money to find or create loopholes in the bylaws so they can continue to block the retired members access to their earned disability benefits or a livable pension that matches (MLB) Major league Baseball!

As an attorney and agent, I am horrified at how this union operates. The leadership is concerned with one thing: accumulating and maintaining central power. It is so transparent, and anyone who dares to question their actions are either ignored or vilified depending on the level of attention they can generate.

The percentage of money that is generated by Players Inc. and kept by the union is amazing. No player would allow an agent to take that large a stake. There is enough money in those fees alone to make a significant start towards treating retired players with respect they deserve.

I cheer you retired players on from the sidelines (as I did my entire life). Take this union leadership to the mat and make them answer for their actions.

I am for any change that will finally put more money in the bank accounts of the older players (not necessarily myself).

Please keep up the good fight.

    Aloha Dave:

As a former teammate of Dave’s, I can attest to his integrity and determination in obtaining fair treatment for the former players of the NFL — and possibly the NCAA in the near future, if we can find an aggressive and fearless law firm.

I successfully obtained minor compensation from the NFL for their government-granted and union-accepted ‘anti-trust’ exemption in the early 80′s.

Those senators and fellow house representative members love to sit in the owners’ boxes during the regular season and especially the playoffs and Super Bowls!

I would love to see the guest list of Dan Snyder’s little unit in Washington — and you may interpret that statement in different ways.

As players, we must resist the efforts by the owners to divide and humiliate us, including our own supposed union, if we are ever to equal the gains made by baseball, basketball and other entertainment unions.
